The incidence of Shaken Baby Syndrome in Italy
by Roberta Lunghini - 2016.04.20The “Shaken Baby Syndrome”, also called Abusive head trauma (AHT) by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2009, is the injury to a child’s brain as a result of an abuse. It has been estimated that the incidence of this phenomenon in Italy may be 3 cases per 10,000 children aged less than one year. As demonstrated by the SIN (Italian Society of Neonatology), however, the figure is likely to be frightfully underestimated and represents only the tip of a big iceberg. Thanks to a recent study conducted in Scotland, the US, New Zealand and Switzerland which shows an incidence of 14.7-38.5 cases/100,000 children we also know that 25-30% of the young victims died and only 15% survive with no damages.
