Swedes swallow too many ADHD pills

by Claudia Moschi - 2013.01.10

The Swedish Agency for Health and Welfare has revealed that prescriptions to treat ADHD have considerably increased , especially among girls. Only in 2011 they were used by 57.235 people. What’s worrying is that these meds, such as Ritalin and Strattera, were often prescribed to patients aged between 10 and 17. If in 2006 young consumers of methylphenidate were179, at the end of 2011 they were grew to 551. Among them the sex distribution was uneven: it was mostly girls who were diagnosed and then treated with ADHD stimulants. And between 2006 and 2011 among girls there has been a +260% increase in of consumption whereas among boys it was a solid +160%. The Agency has explained that doctors have become more aware of ADHD related problems hence they were more quick in acknowledging their symptoms even among the once neglected females. But that’s not all there is: the survey has showed that the young do not only do stimulants, they also do anxiolytics and anti-depressants. That’s way Sweden has launched a wide talk between medical, psychiatric and educational associations in order to limit as much as possible the consumption of psychoactive substances among the youngest.
