Not even gymnastics can prevent Alzheimer’s

Physical activity does not protect against Alzheimer’s. Previous studies have attempted to prove the positive association between sports and Alzheimer’s risk. However, a recently published study by a French research institute, INSERM, challenges this long held claim. The researchers monitored the lifestyle of a large sample of individuals between the ages of 35 - 55 for as long as 28 years. They discovered that, compared to those who were sedentary, the individuals who underwent some form of physical training for 2-3 hours a week, participating in activities of low, medium, or high intensity (e.g. walking, running, cycling, swimming, dancing) demonstrated no particular benefits for cognitive functions. Which opens the door to further scientific debate over whether, despite the proven benefits of sport to heart health and overall well-being, there are any real advantages for one’s mental health.
