New Italian app allows deaf individuals to contact Department of Civil Protection

Now, even Italian citizens who are hearing impaired can call the Operations Center of the Department of Civil Protection in Rome. A new app for Smartphone allows deaf people to be independent and call quickly and easily. Either to ask for information or, most importantly, to send an alert regarding dangerous or difficult situations such as fires, floods, or any type of emergency. This is possible thanks to this new, free downloadable, Pedius, developed for iOS Android systems. The highly innovative system allows the deaf person to choose to communicate by speaking or by writing a message, using the keys of the Smartphone, which, in turn, will be transformed into a vocal message (artificial voice) in real-time. The message will be received by a hearing operator whose vocal response to the message will be transformed into text that will be displayed visually on the deaf individual’s phone, similar to a chat.
