A marriage via Skype between an Italian and a foreigner is also valid in Italy. The Supreme Court, in fact, rejected the request of the Italian Interior Ministry to declare a wedding which took place in Pakistan between a citizen of that country and an Italian illegitimate.  They had not attended the ceremony in person, but electronically. The story had originated from the refusal by the officer of the municipality of San Giovanni in Persiceto (BO) to register the marriage, since the type of celebration was considered contrary to Italy's public policy. The Supreme Court, however, has pointed out that to try the free and informed consent of the spouses to become husband and wife does not require their simultaneous presence in front of the official. In conclusion, if this type of union is permitted by state law where the rite is performed, it must also be good for the Italian set of rules.
