Everything is ready for the first gay unions in Italy, which could be celebrated as early as the beginning of August. This is thanks to the green light given by the State Council to the decree establishing the register of civil unions for homosexual couples. It commented that, with this measure, “the Italian government has responded to the practical and relational needs of many citizens, enabling them to have the support of a relationship that is legally regulated by the state, to fulfil their desire to live freely as a couple and share their lives, governed by the recognition of the related, essential rights relating to property, estate and inheritance, with the related obligations of mutual assistance and solidarity.” Of note is that, as for the official who presides over the ceremony, the text refers generically to a “state official”, thus overcoming the obstacle of mayors who may be conscientious objectors. If a mayor refuses to marry a same-sex couple, another official can sanction the union.
