They might forego a trip to the hairdresser's but Italians would never miss a pet grooming appointment. This is proof that the habits of the average Italian are changing: they are now spending an average of €800 a year on dogs and €400 on their cats, which is more than they spend on their own personal appearance. Pampered and spoilt rotten, more so than children, the real masters of the house are now the ones with four paws. This domestic revolution is particularly significant, not just in terms of human relations but also in economic terms, as demonstrated by the Chamber of Commerce of Monza and Brianza. The latter found that, over the past five years, companies in the pet industry have grown by 20 per cent, compared to a meagre 2.7 per cent for businesses in the personal services sector, such as hairdressers and beauty salons.
