Islam in the classroom. This is what happens in Germany, namely in North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous of the German Länder, which this year introduced the teaching of Islam at schools. It is no coincidence, for that matter, because here lives one third of all the followers of Muhammad in Germany. The first lessons are started last week in 44 schools, with the participation of some 2,500 Muslim pupils. Few, compared to 320 thousand Muslim children enrolled in a primary school in the region. On the other hand, qualified teachers are not more than a hundred, as the regional Ministry of Education reported. In addition, only in the last half of winter it was established, at the University of Münster, a chair of the "teaching of the Islamic religion." Despite the inevitable starting problems, however, the lessons of Islam (first in Germany) are meeting consensus: the experts of the Muslim world see them as a defense for young people against extremism, while the political world considers a strong signal for integration. Just think that the law was approved by a large majority: Verdi, Social Democrats and Christian Democrats.
