Huge success for Italy’s super-project for individuals with dyslexia

The program Io ascolto (I listen) is a super-project in Italy that is helping students with dyslexia improve reading skills. Funded by an Italian foundation, Fondazione CRT, together with a university in the city of Turin, named Università degli Studi di Torino, the project had already been tested successfully in 5 schools in Turin, and was extended this year to another 14 educational institutions throughout the city. It entails games and exercises ad hoc, that work on strengthening four cognitive functions: perception; memorization; discrimination; and association of sounds and images. The initiative, the only one of its kind in Italy, is based on three innovative components: First. The program is offered to the entire class, not only to those who are dyslexic. This serves not only to avoid discrimination, but also to allow all students to improve their auditory and visual memory because it can be useful for everyone. Second. The training is given to students between the ages of 5 and 7 because this is the optimal age for brain plasticity. Finally, sound absorbing panels are installed in the classes and this helps to reduce background noise and reverberation sound. This, in turn, improves hearing ability and the ability to distinguish words phonologically, skills that serve to optimize reading.
