Germany's population is getting a boost from immigration. According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, in 2013 the German population rose to 80.8 million, compared to 80.5 million at the beginning of the year. The increase was due to more than 400,000 foreigners who settled in the country, which is a record number in the past 20 years. The trend is upwards, with 279,000 in 2011 and 369,000 in 2012, and allows Berlin to cope with the low birth rate, which continues to decrease (there were 200,000 fewer births last year). The number of immigrants is likely to increase again this year, as Romania and Bulgaria are admitted into the Schengen area. From 2006 to 2012, the number of citizens from those two Balkan nations who emigrate each year to Germany has quadrupled.
