French court validates Franco-Moroccan gay marriageby Paola Battista - 2015.01.30
Paris has taken a step forward towards marriage for all. The French supreme court has validated the marriage of a French-Moroccan homosexual couple, despite the agreement signed in 1981 between Paris and Rabat, which respected the ban on Moroccan citizens marrying, abroad as in the homeland, French people of the same sex. The agreement led to the annulment of Dominique and Mohamed's marriage in September 2013, just two days after they celebrated their ceremony. But the court put an end to the discriminatory interference and rejected the annulment. “Marriage is a fundamental freedom, which cannot be prevented by an agreement passed between France and Morocco, if the Moroccan groom has a tie with France,” the judge declared in a landmark ruling. This applies to Mohamed, who is Moroccan but is resident in France.
