There are about 17,000 girls at risk of genital mutilation in Spain. The girls are younger than 15, from sub-Saharan countries (where the practice of infibulation persists) and currently living in Spain. In percentage terms, this is an increase of 61.4% compared to 2008. This is what emerges from a study led by the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). It found that, following the increased migration flow, also the number of women from countries where this painful mutilation is practiced has grown by 40% over the past five years.
