In Italy, assisting a patient suffering from a rare disease in 90% of the cases has negative effects on the employment of the relatives. Especially as far as the parents are concerned, who are often forced to limit or stop their work activity in order to take care of their ill child. A fact which can be easily understood if we consider that only 17% of the sample has the clinical center of reference in the city of residence and 40% is forced to go in another region. A cost that is not only social but also economic, because 25% of the households spends more than € 500 euro per month for the treatment. This is what emerges from a survey conducted by the Institute for Social Affairs (IAS).
