Wheelmap.org
The satellite navigator for disabled people

From now on, Italian disabled people have at their disposal a new tool that increases their autonomy, letting them know where to go, thanks to an interactive online map. In order to find information on places accessibility and services provided, all they need to do is going on the website wheelmap.org. In addition, the platform offers the possibility of citizens’ direct participation, signalling themselves the presence of architectural barriers in bars, restaurants, museum and other public places. All with the help of a simple legend that guides the user through the navigation. The green colour, for instance, signals that the destination place is easily accessible with the wheelchair. Yellow indicates the partial accessibility, while red outlines the presence of insurmountable obstacles. The idea, which started in Germany on the initiative of a disabled named Raul Krauthausen, is gaining great success and is spreading in many other countries.
