The giant with feet of clay

On 1 January 2011, the population of the EU-27 was estimated to be 502.5 million. Even if positive the datum should be read with attention and caution. After all the number is a mere addition of national statistics which doesn’t look upon the deep differences that exist between the member states. Indeed, while Luxemburg registers the largest relative increase (+19.3%) Lithuania had the largest extensive decrease (-25%). Even if there is a total increase of the population of the EU this is not due to a baby-boom. The truth lies in the fact that the Old World is more and more populated by immigrants rather than Europeans. Nevertheless, there is a bright spot. Studying carefully the data, with more than half-billion inhabitants a United Europe would classify itself at the third place after China and India in the special ranking of the most populated countries of the world. It is certainly not a minor consideration thinking that demography is still a crucial factor in measuring the strength of a country. That’s an additional reason to keep carrying out the dream of an United States of Europe.
