The resolution adopted on September 9th by the European Parliament with the support of the Greens, United Left, the Socialists and the Liberals states that Roma expulsions should be immediately halted. France above all comes under fire from the MEPs because its repatriation program raises “serious concern” and because it is accused for his “provocative and openly discriminatory rhetoric that has characterized the political discourse, giving credibility to racist statements and actions of far-right groups”. The resolution’s condemnation involves Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and especially Italy. MEPs also criticized the EU institutions, especially the Commission, accused of delays and reluctance to act against the French plan. Aside from far-right parties, the resolution did not get the votes either of the European People’s Party (where the MEPs of the UMP, Sarkozy’s political party, sit) or the group of the European Conservatives and Reformists.
