Technological advances for elderly

A group of European researchers has developed an electronic program which is able to improve the daily life of the elderly and disabled people. In technical jargon it is called “URC interface [1]” (Universal Remote Console). It is a device which can be installed in a universal remote control, a mobile phone or a computer and is used, for instance, to turn on or set the washing machine, the lighting, heating or air-conditioning system, the TV set, the DVD player and other domestic appliances. This technology, discovered within the “I2HOME [2]” project and financed by the EU with over 2.7 million Euros (Digital Agenda Plan), has been already tested with good results in some service centres and apartments in Czech Republic, Germany, Spain and Sweden. If it will be produced on a large scale, this device could help thousands of old people suffering from visual or cognitive disabilities, to live an independent and decent life.
