‘Space, not spikes’ is the slogan of a group of young people who have decided to transform some of London’s public spaces – where steel spikes are often placed to deter the homeless from sleeping in corners – into comfortable beds. They have stuck mattresses over the spikes, which are often seen in front of shops, blocks of flats and in public parks, to help those seeking shelter on the streets of London. During the day, the bed is also available for any passers-by and tourists, who can rest and read a book thanks to a small library placed nearby. This is an original way to protest against a practice that many have compared to the spikes people place on buildings and balconies to keep pigeons and other birds away.
