The Romanian Government has appointed Valentin Mocanu State Secretary to resolve the thorny issue of the Roma in relations with France. A decision, made after that last July 26 the Government of Sarkozy threatened the new EU members, during the meeting of foreign eu ministers, to block its adhesion to the Schengen area in 2011. “I do not want to see more (Roma) children forced to beg on the streets of Paris. This is not good nor for Europe’s image neither for that of Romania”, said French State Secretary for European Affairs, M. Lellouche, “the principle of freedom of movement does not mean opening the door to all kinds of trafficking.”
Of the 2.5 million Romanian citizens emigrated to Western Europe, after the demolition of the EU borders, many belonging to Roma ethnic. Tens of thousands have settled in French, Italian and Spanish shantytowns often provoking tensions with local populations. Just after the violence of Saint-Aignan, occurred France in mid-July, the French government decided to dismantle 300 nomadic camps and to repatriate many of “criminals”.” Hence the need for Romania to form a unit within the Ministry of Social Affairs also to manage their integration. A choice with uncertain results. Over the past three years, France decided to repatriate, giving also a check of 300 euros, about 8,000 Roma people. Of these 1/3 has already returned to France.
