Retired and beaten

If the disparity in wages between men and women has long been on the political agenda of the German government, now Berlin faces a second problem: the disparity in pensions. A study by the Ministry of Family and Equal Opportunities, in fact, reveals that the German women receive a pension equal to about 60% of that of a man: this means that while the latter can expect, on average, € 1,595 monthly, the fair sex receives just € 645. The worst situation is experienced by married women, who take 63% less than their peers (rising to 65.4% for widows). On the contrary, the retirement of the ladies who never marry is almost equal to that of a man, while for the the divorced ones the pension gap stood at 18%. The situation of the over-65, however, radically changes taking into account the different Länder. And, as often happens in the field of equal opportunities, also this time, the regions of the former DDR recorded the best results. In Eastern regions, the gap is 36.7%, while the gap widens to almost 64% in the West.
