In Spanish hospitals the use of straightjackets to pin down patients suffering from “psychomotor restlessness” is on the agenda. Especially towards dependant older people and dementia affected ones (60% of cases). An outdated practice in most of Westernized countries, but still fashionable in Spain due to an outright vacation legis on the issue. Nevertheless, scientists at international level are condemning this extreme measure already since many years because of its several negative effects: from the loss of autonomy to heavy self-esteem deficits. It goes without mention that immobilizing limbs for an extended period of time speeds up the physical damage especially among elderly people. Following the protests on behalf of many associations fighting against a treatment that reminds of middle-aged tortures, the government of Navarra has thus passed a decree in order to minimize this physical abuse towards vulnerable subjects. Among the priorities, a greater awareness for health staff and the encouragement of alternative solutions more respectful of the person’s dignity. As, for example, relaxation activities or the building of enclosures within healthcare facilities. This is the outcome of a research conducted by the “Untie the Senior Association”.
