In Poland, the intolerance towards sexual diversity has reached alarming levels. In fact, more and worse than in the rest of Europe where gays are forced to undergo psychological violence and marginalization, what really dominates in Warsaw is hatred. Made of physical assault and, in one case out of 10, even sexual abuse. In an overwhelmingly Catholic country that should be tolerant, if not at least capable of understanding, however, homosexuality is considered a real shame. Almost a disease that needs treatment. Without and against the will of the people involved. As witnessed by the horrific repeat of what in the case of lesbians has gone so far as to use rape as an instrument of “healing.” A framework made more serious by the fact that the actors of so much homophobia are not pure and simple street extremists who proclaim themselves champions of the Church, but often friends of the victims of their abuses: classmates, covered by their parents, colleagues or neighbors. Towards whom more often whose who should report them manifests culpable complicity. To the point that there are many cases where teachers rather than punish hateful anti-homosexual bullying play an active part to alert parents to have a pervert child. A climate, denounced by the Campaign Against Homophobia in Warsaw, reminiscent of the Counter-religious phobias and that deprives the victims of the protection even of those whom the state requires to defend them.
