Follow-up report
Unattended prisoners

Lots of suicides cases in Northern Ireland are partially ascribed to the Prison Service carelessness. The j’accuse comes from the Criminal Justice Inspection (CJIN). Indeed, a follow-up report on The Treatment of Vulnerable Prisoners by the Northern Ireland Prison Service has been recently published. It report prison officers did not comply with the guidelines published in 2009 by Prisoner Ombudsman. 2 years later some steps have been taken, but more should be done. Part of prison officers still have a double job, taking advantage of night ships to take a rest or relax themselves watching TV. They do not carry out their duty monitoring regularly prisoners, paying special attention for those considered “vulnerable”. Anyway not all the culpability charge on the jail workers. The CJIN report point out on the training for prisoner officers who should receive appropriate briefing to enable them to carry out their role in caring for vulnerable prisoners effectively.
