Flying for obese people is a nightmare for many reasonsby Angelica Basile - 2017.01.11
For obese people, flying is a nightmare. Stacy Bias knows all too well. Artist and activist from London, she has always been oversized. And after yet another intercontinental flight caused her numerous problems, she decided to tell her personal story in a short, animated feature, Flying While Fat. The main character is an overweight woman who spends the entire flight being stressed out, starting with the seat which is way too narrow for her. Not to mention the seatbelt which is not long enough and forces her to ask for an extention, in front of everyone. Needless to say, she is dying of embarassment. The worst fate of all is seeing the sneers of the people who find out that they “have to” sit next to a person with a few extra pounds. “It is the normal sized people who are convinced that their comfort is going to be compromised the most” – says Stacy – “when the fact of the matter is that we are really the ones to suffer the greatest discomfort. In fact, we do everything possible to make our size cause as few problems as possible. To the point of not going to the bathroom for the entire flight, so as not to disturb others”.
