The progressive vision loss in old age may fall into a state of real depression. Many older men and women, in fact, find themselves in a short time having to deal with the loss of the known references and the inability to perform simple daily activities. As a result of slipping slowly into the “evil of life.” A harsh reality that often, through indifference or incompetence, is underestimated by both family members and health personnel. That’s why a team of Spanish psychologists have devised a test to detect the degree of depression in patients over-65 who are experiencing a gradual blindness. It’s called “Geriatric Depression Scale” (GDS). A tool as simple as useful: it is just a questionnaire that has already been tested on 329 people only affected by vision loss. The result: 14% of the sample was affected by mood disorders and 28% risk of contracting this disease.
