39 million people are blind worldwide. Of these, 1.4 million children aged under 15 years are irreversibly blind for the rest of their lives. Cataracts remain the leading cause of this kind of impairment.  Although those due to uncontrolled diabetes are increasing. These are some of the figures released by the Italian Ministry of Health during the presentation of the “Report to the Parliament on the state of implementation of policies concerning the prevention of blindness, education and visual rehabilitation”.
