The fight against HIV is a small but important step forward thanks to the use of antiretroviral drugs in people that are at risk of infection but not yet sick. This brackthroug is a result of “Prep project” partners, sponsored by the Gates Foundation with $ 63 million, and it involved 4,758 HIV serodiscordant couples, in which just one partner has HIV, from nine research sites in Kenya and Uganda and Botswana. The data showed the effectiveness of the treatment in reducing the infection rate by 23% ( from 60% to 83%) in the case when it is taken by healthy people who have risky sex. However, if it is not possible denying the research progress and especially the hope to eradicate this plague of modernity, it is important to follow the expert’s advice to continue using condoms, since it is the only weapon still available in waiting for a vaccine.
