The Council of Europe in defense of religious freedom
Last Thursday, January 20, the Committee of Ministers of the 47 Member States of the Council of Europe unanimously adopted a declaration on religious freedom as enshrined by Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Referring to the recent attacks against Coptic Christians in Egypt, the Council said that “There can be no democratic society based on mutual understanding and tolerance without respect for freedom of thought, conscience and religion”.
